Grade 5 titanium is the most commonly used alloy as an alpha+beta alloy. Grade 5 titanium alloys account for 50% of total titanium usage worldwide. Typically, Ti-6Al-4V is used for applications below 400°C. It is significantly stronger than "commercially pure" titanium (grades 1-4) due to its heat treatment possibility. This grade offers an excellent combination of strength, corrosion resistance, weldability and workability, making it the first choice for many applications. Alpha alloys contain elements such as aluminum and tin and are preferred for high-temperature applications because of their superior creep characteristics. Thesα-stable elements either suppress changes in the phase transition temperature or increase the phase transition temperature. Beta alloys contain transition elements such as vanadium, niobium and molybdenum, which tend to lower the alpha to beta phase transition temperature. Beta alloy has excellent hardenability and responds quickly to heat treatment. These materials are highly forgeable and have high fracture toughness.
